Media Literacy 7
Welcome to Media Litearacy 7! (Social media and pop culture)
Here is a brief description of the course I am teaching:
Students will have the opportunity to examine the social, moral, and ethical implications of computer technology. Computer literacy involves not only the ability to use the computer and the Internet, but also the ability to understand and evaluate the effects of this new technology on our society. Students will be encouraged to explore the various aspects of social media, advertising, privacy issues, and web page content.
Popular culture is a composition of artifacts, institutions, customs, hobbies, and fads of mainstream culture. Currently accepted values, social concerns, and standards of beauty, success, and justice are both reflected in and influenced by popular culture. By studying trends, toys, institutions, pastimes, celebrities, and heroes of dominant North American culture, students will be challenged to critically examine the beliefs and values of their society. In addition, students will evaluate the extent to which popular culture influences and shapes not only societal behaviours, values and beliefs, but their own as well.
